Strength Tarot - What Does it Mean?

Unpacking the Tarot - Strength

The Tarot have been used for centuries to predict the future and answer our deepest questions. The traditional deck contains 78 cards — the 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards.

While the Minor Arcana can help shed light on the actions and decisions we make every day, the Major Arcana helps us understand our life’s purpose. Each card represents situations we face through our journey and the lessons we all must learn.

Here is a closer look at the next card in the deck, Strength.

STRENGTH

This card is literal, but it doesn’t refer to physical might. This is about strength of character and will. It is a strength to maintain self-control and composure no matter what comes your way. Where the Chariot told of external obstacles, the Strength card suggests your challenges come from within. Yet, the appearance of this card may indicate that you already possess strength you need.

THE IMAGERY

The Strength card depicts a woman dressed in white with her hands on the mouth of a lion. She doesn’t fear the animal. Despite its physical power, she is the one in control and handles the lion calmly and gently. The lion symbolizes ambition, passion and courage while the woman represents discipline, especially in the face of adversity.

Together, they serve as a reminder not to let our animal instincts and raw emotions overcome us. We must keep certain feelings in check. When we do that, we’ll experience stability and calm, just like the sturdy mountains pictured on the card in the distance.

THE MEANING

If you’re facing an illness, injury or some other obstacles, this card means good things. It reminds you that you’re strong and courageous. No matter what you are facing, you can conquer anything you put your mind to. Don’t let your fears and anxieties hold you back from getting what you want. But don’t forget to show yourself compassion too. Take control of your emotions before they get the better of you.

THE RESEVERSE

In reverse, the Strength card suggests that you are giving into your fear and anxiety. You still have inner strength but you’re struggling to access it. You likely feel insecure, weak, lonely and vulnerable. It may foretell an upsetting experience is on the way. Make an effort to rebuild your confidence and spend time doing things you love. Your strength is there — go find it.
